Renewable Energy Programs: Various regional initiatives and programs aimed at promoting renewable energy and improving energy access were launched. Notable examples include the African Renewable Energy Initiative (AREI) and the Africa Clean Energy Corridor (ACEC).

Recognition of Gaps: Despite these efforts, it became clear that a more coordinated and strategic approach was necessary to comprehensively address the complex energy challenges.
Foundation and Establishment
2018: Conceptualization of AESC

Think Tank Meetings: Leading African energy experts, policymakers, and representatives from international organizations began to conceptualize a coalition that would unify efforts and holistically address energy security. These discussions were often held at international conferences and workshops on sustainable development.

Strategic Planning: Detailed strategic planning sessions were conducted to outline the proposed coalition's vision, mission, and objectives. The focus was on creating a platform to drive policy reforms, foster collaboration, and promote innovation in the energy sector.
2019: Official Launch

Founding Members: In 2019, the Africa Energy Security Coalition (AESC) was officially launched with the support of several key founding members, including representatives from key African governments, and bodies including the private sector entities, and civil society organizations.

Inaugural Summit: The AESC summit was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where the coalition’s strategic plan was unveiled. This event brought together stakeholders from across the continent to discuss and commit to the coalition’s goals.
Early Achievements and Growth
2020-2022: Initial Projects and Expansion

Policy Advocacy: AESC began its work by advocating for policy and regulatory reforms in member countries, focusing on creating a favourable environment for energy investments and adopting renewable energy technologies.

Pilot Projects: The coalition funded and supported several pilot projects aimed at increasing energy access in rural areas and integrating renewable energy sources into national grids. Successful projects in countries like Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa served as models for other member states.

Capacity Building: AESC launched capacity-building programs to train government officials, energy sector professionals, and community leaders on best practices in energy management and policy implementation.
2023: Regional and International Recognition

Awards and Accolades: AESC received recognition for its efforts in promoting sustainable energy solutions and improving energy security in Africa. The coalition was awarded the African Union’s Prize for Innovation in Energy Policy.
