History of the Africa Energy Security Coalition (AESC)

Origins and Formation

The Africa Energy Security Coalition (AESC) was conceived in response to the growing recognition of Africa's unique and pressing energy challenges. Despite its vast natural resources, Africa has faced significant barriers to achieving energy security, including inadequate infrastructure, policy and regulatory gaps, and limited access to modern energy services.

The Africa Energy Security Coalition (AESC) continues to be a pivotal organization in transforming Africa’s energy landscape, fostering collaboration, and driving progress towards a secure, sustainable, and inclusive energy future for the continent.

Early 2010s: Growing Awareness

  • During the early 2010s, several African countries began to experience rapid economic growth, leading to increased energy demand. However, this growth highlighted the severe limitations in the existing energy infrastructure and the need for more robust and sustainable energy solutions.

  • Regional discussions on energy security started gaining momentum at forums such as the African Union (AU) summits and the African Development Bank (AfDB) meetings. Leaders recognized the need for a coordinated effort to address energy issues across the continent.

2015: The Paris Agreement

  • Adopting the Paris Agreement 2015 provided a significant impetus for African nations to commit to sustainable energy development. The Agreement underscored the need for countries to transition to renewable energy sources and enhance energy efficiency to combat climate change.

  •  This global commitment catalysed African leaders to prioritize energy security and sustainability, setting the stage for collaborative initiatives.
